Here are some tips on start-up.
-Choose a home business idea that interests you, one which you have a
talent or expertise, one that will fill a need.
-Do some market research. With a work from home business, as with any
business, get as much information as possible on your would be
customers, and competition, before you start.
- Check for and get all necessary licenses, permits etc. for your line
of business.
-Do some self-marketing. Go to stores, companies, etc., to market
your service or product. Spend some time finding out about your
potential customers before you try to sell to them.
-Design a work area that is separate from the mainstream of your home
activities. Install a separate business phone, fax and Internet
connections, this looks more professional for a work from home
business than sharing with your family.
-Make use of free publicity. Send out news releases, present your
product or service to a newspaper editor, radio or T.V. producer if
you have an offline business.
-Lack of managerial expertise is one of the single highest causes of
home business failure. Take some courses, get expert advice or hire
some qualified help, but do learn basic management skills before you
start your home based business.
-Compare notes with owners of similar businesses outside your market
area to get an idea of the potential and status of that line of
business.
-Join business community associations, like your chambers of
commerce, business networks or clubs to help establish contacts.
-Find out about allowable deductions for automobile expenses,
business meals and entertainment, and home offices expenses for
self-employed persons. Make sure you know what taxes you are
responsible to pay.
